Funding opportunities for international collaboration

Information on the following programs is available either directly from the Internet links provided or from the Office of International Research (Tel: 4197). All applications must be signed by the applicant and department Chair, and reviewed by OIR prior to submission. The deadlines are for receipt of applications by the funding body. McGill deadlines are a few days earlier.

GERMANY - October 30, 1999: German - American Academic Council Foundation (DAAK) - Transatlantic Research Cooperation Program. Awards for joint research projects involving German and Canadian (and/or U.S.) scholars in the social sciences or humanities, including economics and law (related natural sciences and engineering projects are also eligible). Project funding up to a maximum of DM 90,000 (US$50,000) is available for each of three years, and must be matched by funds from Canadian and/or U.S. sources. NSERC's International Development Fund could be a source of matching funds for some proposals. More information available at www.gaac.org/transco.html.

INDIA - October 30, 1999: Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. The Shastri Institute is looking for Canadian candidates for the position of Vice-President for its New Delhi office for the period 2000 - 2001. The position would interest professors who anticipate a sabbatical or administrative leave at that time and who intend to conduct research in India. A research grant is provided. The Shastri Institute also offers a nine-week summer program in India, for undergraduate students. The program is a credit course on development issues. MILLENNIUM PROJECTS - October 31, 1999 & March 1, 2000: Canada Millennium Partnership Program. Canadian organizations and associations can apply for funding of creative initiatives marking the new millennium. Funding to one third of the total eligible expenditures. JAPAN - November 9, 1999: Japan Foundation Programs. The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) administers two programs funded by the Japan Foundation: 1) Special Grant for Japanese Studies in Canada: $200,000 is provided to Canadian universities each year for the development of Japanese studies programs in the social sciences and humanities; 2) $100,000 is available through the Tanaka Fund to enable Canadian universities to enhance their Japanese language programs. INDIA - November 15, 1999: Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute: Women and Development Awards. Awards cover travel and lodging. There are five categories: 1) Faculty Research Fellowships (3-12 months); 2) Postdoctoral Research Awards (3-12 months); 3) Doctoral Research Awards (3-12 months); 4) Pilot Project Awards (up to 2 months); 5) Visiting Lectureships (3-week tours). USA - November 15, 1999: Canada-US Fulbright Program. Two types of awards: 1) Distinguished Chair awards, for candidates with a prominent record of scholarly accomplishment. Scholars apply to fill a specific position for a period of 3-9 months. The award is up to US$15,000, to be matched by the home or the host institution; 2) Grants-in-Aid, offered to junior and tenured college and university faculty, as well as professionals and independent scholars. Duration of grants is 3-9 months (up to US$15,000). Candidates propose their own lecturing or lecturing/research endeavours and host affiliations. TRILATERAL (MEXICO-USA-CANADA) - November 19, 1999: Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) - Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education. Awards of up to $160,000 per project for trilateral co-operation in higher education and training. Support is oriented to student mobility and the development of international joint projects. RUSSIA - December 1, 1999 & March 1, 2000: University of Calgary / Gorbachev Foundation - Public Policy Project. Support for projects with Russia (up to $130,000 over 3 years) which contribute practical solutions to problems in the area of public policy, with a special interest in the design and implementation of projects relating to essential social services. CAMBRIDGE - December 15, 1999: Corpus Christi College - Fellowships. Planning a sabbatical? Corpus Christi College is offering up to 6 Fellowships for established scholars between the ages of 35 and 65. Visiting scholars become members of the University of Cambridge during their stay and are provided with accommodation. There is no stipend. CANADIAN STUDIES - December 31, 1999: International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) - Program for International Research Linkages. Support (grants of up to $8,000) to facilitate international collaborative research by providing assistance to teams of researchers from Canada and one or more countries in order to organise seminars or other forms of research linkages in the area of Canadian Studies.
