To the Editor:

Thank you for your article "Grammy award-winning teachers." Indeed, great teachers and students deserve recognition. Mr. George Massenburg, one of the adjunct professors you briefly mentioned in the article, deserves a few more words of recognition. He is probably one of the most respected producer/engineers in the "non-classical" music industry, as well as the winner of three Grammys and a recipient of a Technical Grammy this year for "Lifetime Achievement." Through his Los Angeles-based company GML Inc., Professor Massenburg designs and manufactures high-quality studio recording equipment. Last year, George received a Grammy with Linda Ronstadt for the "Best Children's Record," but could not accept the award in person because he was busy working with students at McGill.

Similarly, our graduate Richard King, who works with Professor Epstein at Sony Classical, was nominated for the "Best Engineered Classical Recording" Grammy for his recording of Herrmann's Film Scores with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen, conductor. Richard did not win, this time.

Peter Cook, another graduate from our program (as well as a teacher who visits every two weeks from the CBC Broadcast Centre in Toronto), won the 1998 Gemini Award in the category of Best Sound in a Comedy, Variety or Performing Arts Program or Series, for the film: A Tale of Tanglewood: Peter Grimes Reborn.

Clearly, these teachers, graduates and students are highly praised for their professional accomplishments and contribute to the good name McGill has earned in the discipline of sound recording. Thank you for finding it appropriate to write about the strong affinity these individuals have for McGill.
