News from the Office of International Research

The Office of International Research (OIR) is pleased to announce that Geralyne Dionne has joined the staff as Grants and Contracts Officer on an interim basis. Ms. Dionne has a master's degree in Library and Information Studies (McGill, 1987) and extensive experience working as an information professional in government and research environments. She replaces Madeleine Gauthier who left McGill in January 1998 for a research position at Cornell University.

JAPAN

Asahi Fellowship

Deadline: February 27

The Asahi Shimbun Foundation offers fellowships to academics under 40 for a year's study and research in Japan. The award helps to develop academic or professional expertise and to promote a knowledge of Japan. Interested applicants must have a contact/host in Japan.

LATIN AMERICA

MINGA Sabbatical Grants

Deadline: March 31

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is offering grants for two academics to spend 6 to 8 months at an IDRC partner institution under its program, Alternative Approaches to Natural Resource Management in Latin America and the Caribbean (MINGA). Grant 1 is for collaborative planning for sustainable development of marginalized regions of Latin America. Grant 2 is to study conflict resolution and negotiation for sustainable use of natural resources.

FRANCE

Centre de coopération interuniversitaire Franco-Québécois (CCIFQ)

Deadline: May 1

The CCIFQ provides financial support to encourage contacts and co-operation between researchers in France and Quebec. The Colloques interuniversitaires Franco-Québécois program will contribute up to 15,000 French francs towards jointly organized colloquia in 1998 or 1999.

GREAT BRITAIN - No deadline

The British Council in Canada provides travel grants to support links between Canadian and British academics and institutions. Contact OIR for details.

QUEBEC GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS

Soutien aux professeurs-chercheurs invités

Deadline: February 27

This program will support faculty members invited to spend 4 Ð 6 weeks at a university in France during 1998. Priority is given to new professors and new collaborations.

Postdoctoral Research Internships in Quebec for young Foreign

Graduates

Deadline: April 15

The Ministry of Education of Quebec offers postdoctoral fellowships to researchers from Western Europe and Scandinavia, as well as Australia, Japan, South Korea, Israel and the United States. Priority areas are health, information technologies, new materials, environment and space science.

Flanders (Belgium)-Quebec Co-operation in Science and Technology

Deadline: April 30

These awards supplement existing joint research initiatives between Flanders and Quebec. Researchers' travel and living costs, as well as student stages are supported for up to three years. Priority areas are health, environment, new materials, information technology and biotechnology.

CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY (CIDA)

CIDA Awards Program for Canadians

Deadline: April 30

Professional Awards provide up to $15,000 for expenses related to international development projects conducted on a volunteer basis by Canadian professionals (e.g., during sabbatical). Academic Awards provide up to $15,000 for the fieldwork component of a master's degree or diploma program. Contact OIR for details.

CIDA University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development: Tier

2 program

The Tier 2 Linkage program provides up to $750,000 over a 5-year period for collaborative projects linking institutions in Canada with partners in developing countries. Each university is restricted to two requests. The deadline for McGill's selection committee is February 28, 1998. Interested researchers should notify Geralyne Dionne at the Office of International Research at 3348.

The Tier 2 Microfund program finances planning missions for the

development of Tier 2 Linkage projects. Deadline March 17.
