Medical Research Council Programs

MRC appreciates that investigators in areas hard hit by the recent ice storm may have experienced serious disruptions to plans for preparing applications for the next MRC competition (deadline March 2). MRC does not wish any applicants to be disadvantaged by these recent disruptions beyond their control. Applicants who will find it difficult to meet the deadline because of the ice storm's impact are asked to contact Dr. Mark Bisby, Director of Programs Branch, as soon as possible to discuss circumstances that may warrant an extension to the March 2 deadline. Each case will be reviewed by MRC on an individual basis. Dr. Bisby can be reached at: tel: 613-954-1959, fax: 613-954-2277 or email: mbisby@hpb.hwc.ca.

SSHRC - New Research Development Initiatives Program

In addition to providing direct support for research or research communication, SSHRC is launching a new funding program: the Research Development Initiatives (RDI), to support a variety of activities which will contribute to the structuring, integration and transfer of knowledge in the social sciences and humanities.

The specific objectives are:

i to encourage critical analysis of the intellectual and social contribution of research and research training in the social sciences and humanities (achievements and impacts);

ii to assess the state of development and the accomplishments and strengths of research (conceptual or methodological perspectives);

iii to reflect on future directions and challenges for research and transfer of research knowledge (identifying and defining intellectual directions and research priorities, innovative methods and structures for the conduct of research, its communications or research training).

A budget of $700,000 has been allocated for the initial year of this program. The average grant will be from $10,000 to $25,000, but requests for up to $50,000 in one year or up to $150,000 over three years will be considered by SSHRC. There will be three competitions per year; the first competition deadline is February 27, 1998. Please consult the SSHRC website for more detailed information about this program.
