Faculty of Management Distinguished Teaching Award (undergraduate)

Diane Castonguay

Faculty of Management

1) I would say the greatest challenge of teaching at the university level is the diversity of students' backgrounds. Students who take the course because it is mandatory are often in the same program and, for the most part, at the same level. However, all the courses I teach can be taken as electives by students from other disciplines.

2) Above and beyond the fundamentals of knowing the material and having experience in the field, you should love what you do, be passionate about the subject, have a willingness to learn from students' experiences and viewpoints especially if they differ from yours, have genuine respect for students, realize that each student learns in his/her own way and keep a sense of humour.
