Professor Irwin Cotler, from the Faculty of Law, has earned the Bar of Montreal's médaille du Barreau de Montréal. The medal is awarded to members of the bar who have shown "outstanding leadership as a jurist and advocate in the pursuit of justice."

Dr. Guy Rouleau, from the Centre for Research in Neuroscience, is the winner of the Prix Léo-Pariseau for outstanding work in the area of biological or health sciences. The prize is awarded by the Association canadienne-française pour l'avancement des sciences. Rouleau helped identify the genes that cause the hereditary form of Lou Gehrig's disease and neurofibromatosis type 2. His work also looks at genetic factors associated with schizophrenia and Andermann syndrome.

Professor Amanda Vincent, from the Department of Biology, has been selected as one of Time's "Young Leaders," talented young Canadians who the magazine predicts will play leadership roles in the future. Vincent was cited for her international efforts to protect the seahorse from extinction.

Professor Avi Friedman, from the School of Architecture, will receive the World Habitat Award in China next month for his role in developing the Grow Home, an innovative and popular approach to low cost housing. The $24,000 award is given by the Building and Social Housing Foundation, an independent research body based in England.

Ms. Eleanor Maclean, head of the Blacker-Wood Library of Biology, is the winner of the McGill University Libraries Career Recognition Award for 1999.

Ms. Mary Lourenço, library supervisor in the Nahum Gelber Law Library, is the winner of the McGill University Libraries' Staff Excellence Award for 1999.

Professor Roger Prichard, from the Institute of Parasitology, received the Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist Award this summer at the annual meeting of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitology.

Mr. David Crawford, Health Sciences area librarian, has received an honorary life membership in the Canadian Health Libraries Association in recognition of and appreciation for his significant contributions to the association and to health sciences librarianship in Canada. The group's only two-time president, Crawford also served on the board of directors for 10 years.

Emeritus Professor of Philosophy Raymond Klibansky has been selected to receive the rank of Grand Officier from the Ordre Nationale du Québec. This is the highest rank in the Ordre.
