Dr. Mimi Belmonte, from the Department of Pediatrics, was made a companion of the Order of Canada at a recent ceremony at Rideau Hall. Now retired, Belmonte taught at McGill for almost 30 years and is world-renowned for her contributions to the field of quality care for children with diabetes.

Mr. Mathieu Darche, a management student, and Mr. Jarrod Daniel, an anatomy student, were two of the players on the Canadian national hockey team that earned a bronze medal at the World University Games in Slovakia. Darche scored two goals in the bronze- medal game.

Professor Emeritus Norbert Schoenauer and Professor Avi Friedman, from the School of Architecture, were recently honoured by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Schoenauer won the ACSA's Distinguished Professor Award, while Friedman earned the Architecture Creative Achievement Award.

Professor John Toth, from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has been awarded the André-Aisenstadt Prize in Mathematics, which is awarded annually by the Centre de recherches mathématiques in recognition of talented young Canadian mathematicians. The prize consists of a medal and a cash award.

Professor John Lydon, from the Department of Psychology, is the winner of a Young Investigator Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology. Lydon gave an invited address on "Maintaining and defending one's relationship: The psychology of commitment" at the recent Annual Meeting of the Society.

Professor Ralph Harris, from the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, is the latest recipient of McGill's Royal Bank Fellowship. As this year's faculty associate in university teaching, Harris is working with the Centre for University Teaching and Learning to establish a web-based teaching and learning workshop specifically designed for engineering professors.

Professor Roy Lyster, from the Department of Second Language Education, is the co-recipient of the 1998 ACTFL-MLJ Paul Pimsleur Award for Research in Foreign Language Education. The prize is awarded by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and The Modern Language Journal. Lyster was honoured for co-authoring a paper that examined corrective feedback in second language immersion classrooms at the primary school level.
