Robert Stephen Broughton
Emeritus Professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering

Robert Broughton first joined McGill in 1961 as a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Engineering. He served as the chair of the department from 1965 to 1971, during which time he developed the agricultural engineering major into a fully credited engineering program.

He has authored or co-authored more than 230 papers and reports on topics dealing with drainage, irrigation and soil and water conservation. Widely regarded for his expertise in agricultural land drainage, Broughton was the founding director of McGill's Centre for Drainage Studies. He has worked on several major drainage engineering projects, both in Canada and in other parts of the world.

He played a large role over the years in assisting the physical development of the Macdonald Campus, its farm and the Morgan Arboretum. In 1995, he was given Macdonald's Mastery of Service Award in recognition of his contributions. In 1989, Broughton was awarded an honorary degree from Dalhousie University.




Alex F. McCalla
Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Alex F. McCalla is the director of rural development for the World Bank and emeritus professor of agricultural economics at the University of California at Davis.

During his career at the University of California, McCalla served as dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and was the founding dean of the Graduate School of Management. His research interests have included microeconomic theory, agricultural policy, international trade policy and economic development.

His work on global food policy issues extends beyond the academic sphere. At the World Bank, McCalla has played a key role in revitalizing the organization's activities in rural development around the globe.
