The Course Outline Project

The Computing Centre, the Centre for University Teaching and Learning and the Instructional Communications Centre have joined forces in an effort to help McGill's teachers learn how to put their course outlines and other materials on the Web. Two seminars are regularly offered to instructors: "Creating a Course Web Page" and "Enhancing Your Course Web Page." For more information, contact Shirley Knight at 3706.

Royal Bank Teaching Innovation Fund

This fund, administered by the CUTL, provides seed money each year to McGill instructors to support creative new teaching practices. Many of the 60 or so teachers who've been supported by the fund have used the money to experiment with technology. Instructors who do receive support from the fund must be able to acquire matching funds from their faculties. Further information can be obtained from Terry Gandell, the fund's coordinator, at 6648 or ax9@musica.mcgill.ca.

Faculty of Science IT Fund

Established last year by Dean of Science Alan Shaver, this fund helps foster new teaching techniques that use information technology. Science professors received $8,000 to $14,000 to support a variety of projects -- Geography professor Thom Meredith set up a website that allowed the students in his seminar to relay the results of their research to the public, for instance, while Chemistry professors Pat Farrell and Arthur Grosser are using e-mail and the web to deliver tutorials to students, instructing them on how to conduct chemistry experiments at home.

For more discussion...

The Faculty of Arts Committee on Teaching is holding a two-hour seminar on using technologies in teaching. History Professor Gil Troy will give a presentation on "Low Technologies" and Economics Professor Myron Frankman will talk about "On-line Discussions." The brief presentations are intended to encourage discussion, and those attending are asked to bring the addresses of their favourite websites. Friday, March 20, 2:30 pm, Arts West 130, RSVP: deslaur@philo.mcgill.ca, or call local 6060.
