Office of International Research

The Office of International Research is pleased to announce that Dr. Duncan Pedersen and his team at the Douglas Hospital Research Centre have secured a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Tier II Award. The project, entitled Mental Health and Human Development, is a joint initiative of McGill University and the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. The award is made under CIDA's University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development Program (UPCD).

CIDA's UPCD Program, Tier I (1998)

Deadline: February 20, 1998

The UPCD program supports partnerships with education and training institutions in developing countries. The Tier I application process requires a letter of intent, followed by a full proposal once a project is accepted. CIDA will provide up to $5 million over a five-year period. Each university can submit only one letter of intent, thus an internal committee will meet to review project outlines and to select McGill's submission. Call the Office of International Research at 4197 for information on preparing an outline.

Note: McGill's internal deadline for project outlines is December 18, 1997.

CIDA's UPCD Program, Tier II (1998)

Deadline: May 15, 1998

This program funds two-thirds of project costs up to $750,000 over a five-year period. McGill may submit two proposals. General information is available from the Office of International Research. Details regarding the selection process will be available in January.

Note: Once program literature has been received a February 1998 internal deadline for project outlines will be announced.

Quebec-Other Provinces Program

Deadline: January 30, 1998

The Government of Quebec supports cooperation in higher education and research with other Canadian provinces by funding the travel, living and tuition costs of teams of Quebec researchers or associated students who wish to collaborate with partners in other provinces. Also available is funding for student internships at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The following fields have priority: biotechnology, the environment, new materials, health, information technology and social impacts of new technologies.

Program for International Research Linkages (PIRL)

Deadline: January 15, 1998

The International Council for Canadian Studies is offering awards of $5,000 to facilitate joint research in the social sciences and humanities. The awards allow researchers from Canada and one or more other countries to organize seminars or other links, aimed at advancing knowledge and understanding of Canadian society.

LATIN AMERICA

Program of Support for Scientific and Technological Cooperation

Deadline: January 3, 1998

The Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) will provide supplementary support for the establishment or strengthening of links between IOHE member universities in the following areas: agriculture, natural resources and their management, university-industry relations, public health, telecommunications.

EUROPE

Quebec-France Program

Deadline: February 27, 1998

Under its program "Soutien aux professeurs-chercheurs invités," the Quebec Government will support the travel and living costs of faculty members who have been invited to spend 4-6 weeks at a French university or Grande École during 1998. Priority will be given to new professors/new collaborations.

Program for Cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe

No deadline

CIDA invites submissions from applicants to obtain partial support for projects that advance the democratic development and economic liberalization of countries of the former Soviet Union, the Baltic States and the former Yugoslavia. For proposal guidelines contact the Office of International Research.

ASIA

China/Canada Scholars Exchange Program 1998-1999

Deadline: February 1, 1998

This program will provide funding for faculty members and graduate students to conduct research or to study in selected Chinese universities for 4-12 months. Awards cover living allowance, medical insurance and any tuition costs. The Canadian government will cover the return airfare.

PRIZES

Lewis Perinbam Award in International Development

Deadline: February 5, 1998

Nominations are invited for the above award, which recognizes outstanding dedication, leadership and vision in international development.
