Professor Vijaya Raghavan, of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, was presented with the Maple Leaf Award by the Canadian Society for Engineering in Agricultural, Food and Biological Systems, given in recognition of outstanding personal qualities, professional abilities and for achievements advancing the goals of the society and the profession.

Professor Peter Hoffman, of the Department of History, has been awarded the Konrad Adenauer Research Award from Germany's Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He will be honoured at a dinner given by the German Consul-General and receive a major cash prize.

Professor Margaret Lock, of the Departments of Social Studies of Medicine and Anthropology, was awarded the 1997 J.I. Staley Prize of the School of American Research for her book Encounters with Aging: Mythologies of Menopause in Japan and North America for "outstanding scholarship in anthropology." The book also won the Wellcome Medal for research in medical anthropology from the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain.

Professor Henry Mintzberg, of the Faculty of Management, was awarded an honorary degree by Simon Fraser University last month and gave a convocation address. SFU's news release notes that Professor Mintzberg is the first fellow elected to the Royal Society of Canada from a management faculty.

Dr. William Feindel, of the Montreal Neurological Institute, has won the 1997 John B. Neilson Award. The presentation was made at a reception at the Osler Library hosted by Associated Medical Services, Incorporated.

Professor Axel Maugey, of the Department of French Language and Literature, has been awarded the Prix Romain Rolland by the Association Romain-Rolland for his book Des Québécois à Hong Kong. The prize is given for a work highlighting dialogue between cultures.

Ms. Catherine Chandler, Administrative Officer in the Department of Biochemistry and lecturer in Spanish at the Centre for Continuing Education, was awarded the $1,000 Grand Prize in the 1997 National Library North American Open Poetry Competition. Her anti-war poem "Cousin Tommy" will be featured in an anthology to be published this winter in the United States.

Dr. Andrew Large, of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, has initiated a partnership with the International Graduate Summer School in Librarianship and Information Science at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth. Mr. André Boudeau, professional associate in the McGill school, will serve as a teacher at the Welsh summer program.

Dr. Ronald Melzack, of the Department of Psychology, received the Janet Travell award for pain management at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Management in September.

Emeritus Professor Paolo Vivante, of the Department of Classics, has written a new book entitled Homeric Rhythm: A Philosophical Study which will be published next summer as part of Greenwood Press's series on Contributions to the Study of World Literature.

Professor Vimla Patel, of the Centre for Medical Education, has been selected to receive the degree of Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Victoria which will be presented at its spring convocation next year. The award is made in recognition of Professor Patel's work in the area of cognitive science in medicine.

Dr. Steve Paraskevas, a fourth-year resident in general surgery, has won the 1997 Scientific Trainee Award of the Canadian Diabetes Association. The prize is given annually by the CDA's Clinical & Scientific Section to "an exceptional research trainee who has demonstrated scientific productivity and innovation."
