From blue to blah

So, there we were, first time out, bragging on our new look and being a little coy about the "dash of colour" added to the makeover. Come the dawn, that dash was nowhere to be seen and we apologize to anyone who spent time looking for it, thinking we must have meant a piece of punctuation.

We had no intention to mislead but, ever the optimists (pessimists don't work at a government-supported institution and by the way, is that an oxymoron?), we reckoned without the glitches endemic to fairly high-tech information transfer.

When the "We can't open your files" call came at midnight, we were too far away and they were without the technology to fix it.

Thus, our long-debated shade of dignified blue for the front page became a dreary battleship gray. Our gloom lifted only slightly when a charitable colleague referred to it as "silver."

And who knows what this Thursday morning will bring? Perhaps a small dyslexic switch in the colour code numbers by one of us somewhere down the production line will produce a front page in shocking pink. If so, we'll keep working to get it right. After all, these little hiccoughs keep us humble.

Speaking of humble, there are a lot of people on campus who have no need to be among them our teaching award winners. They were announced last spring in time for the June convocations, and we will be introducing them to the community during the month of October.

As we said last time, we are still a work in progress and we thank those who have written to make comments and suggestions. Also, please let us know if there are problems with Reporter distribution in your building or area. If your department requires at least 25 papers, we can add your building to our distribution list. If your area is missed one week, we will send extra copies, or if you regularly receive too few (or too many) Reporters, we will adjust our numbers. Just call 6753 with details any weekday afternoon.
