New Policy and Regulations on PhD Comprehensiveness

On March 7, the Council of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research approved a new policy on PhD comprehensives, which will take effect as of the 1997-1998 academic year. The policy requires academic units to provide doctoral students with a written description of the PhD comprehensive covering the following issues: objectives and content, format, timing, assessment, grading and failures. The policy recognizes that expectations for the PhD comprehensive vary according to the needs of the discipline. It is important to make it clear to doctoral students what the expectations and procedures are and to maintain consistency within a given program.

To obtain a copy of the policy, email Lynn Griffin: lgriffin@fgsr.lan.mcgill.ca. The policy is also available on our Web page: http://ww2.mcgill.ca/fgsr/
