Kudos

Mr. Neil G. Barnett and Mr. Jerome Robillard, students in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Macdonald Campus, have won first prize in the 1996 AGCO Student Design Competition. Their winning project was recognized at the international meeting of the Society for Engineering in Agricultural, Food and Biological Systems in July.

Professor Garth Coffin, of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, has been appointed principal of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College effective January 1, 1997. Dr. Coffin, a graduate of the college and McGill, has been at Macdonald Campus since 1979, where he has served as chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics, as well as Associate Dean of Research and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Mr. Stephen Park, Computer Services Librarian in the Law Library, was presented with the Libraries' Career Recognition Award for 1995/96 by Dr. Eric Ormsby at the June convocation.

Ms. Adèle Toutant, Editor in the Law Library, was the recipient of the 1995/96 Library Staff Excellence Award which was presented to her by Dr. Eric Ormsby. For profiles of both winners, see the May 1996 issue of the McGill University Libraries Gazette on infoMcGill.

Mr. David Carson, a student in Economics, last month became the first McGill pitcher to throw a no-hitter. His seven-strikeout performance led the Redbirds to a 15-0 victory over Carleton.

Ms. Elizabth Fajber, a doctoral student in Anthropology, has won the 1996/97 Canadian Northern Studies Trust Award. Her research is entitled "Dene Women and Healing in Fort Good Hope, NWT." The value of the studentship is $10,000.

Dr. Bernard Robaire, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, has been invited by the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. to serve as a member of the Reproductive Biology Study Section, Division of Research Grants, for a four-year period. Study section members review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on these applications and survey the status of research in their fields of science.

Professor Bruce Trigger, of the Department of Anthropology, has delivered the fifth lecture in the Anthropology Postwar/Pre-millenial Intergenerational Conversations series at the University of Chicago. He is one of 10 senior anthropologists from around the world who are being asked to present their views about the development of anthropology.

Ms. Lori Yersh, Annual Fund Officer, and Ms. Eileen McKee, Donor Relations Coordinator, received a Gold Award from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education at its national conference in June. They won in the "special events" category for a reception at which donors were given a tour of World Wide Web sites through giant images projected on the walls of the School of Architecture's exhibition gallery. Judges called the event "exceptional."

Mr. John Cleghorn, who served as chair of McGill's successful Twenty-First Century Fund Campaign, has just been installed as Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo.

Ms. Christine Desmarais, a third-year student in Mechanical Engineering, is one of five students from across Canada to have won the Arthur Surveyer Award from the SNC-Lavalin Group. The award, established in memory of the company's founder, consists of a four-month internship and a $1,500 scholarship.
