This award is given to an early-career professor who shows excellence in graduate supervision. Each year, number theorist and NSERC Steacie prize — winner Henri Darmon attracts fine graduate students to McGill to study a wide range of topics, from the abstract and theoretical to the applied, under his guidance.
Dean of Graduate Studies Martha Crago, in presenting the award to Darmon, said that "He is known for steering his students and postdocs to interesting and difficult problems on the boundary of the unknown, all the while ensuring the attainability of their research goals and infusing his supervisory relationships with warmth and human caring.
"As a teacher, his lectures are crystal clear and his graduate seminars attract students as well as professors from around the world. Darmon's love for and deep understanding of mathematical phenomena inspires his students, his postdocs and his colleagues. His kind and helpful manner nurtures their lives, develops their love for mathematics, and leads them to their own fine accomplishments."
